Digital Isolator vs. Optocoupler: Which One Do You Need?

Isolation components generally fall into two technical approaches. Optocouplers use an LED paired with a light-sensitive receiver (phototransistor, photodiode, SCR, or triac) to carry a signal across the isolation barrier using light rather than a direct electrical path.
